A Low Quality Business Website Won’t Rank Highly

Cheap Web Design

- Should Not Mean Poor Quality

Google unveiled a major update to its ranking algorithm recently, aimed at cracking down on low quality ‘thin’ websites. One of the big challenges for them has been how to deal with content that is not exactly spam but is clearly written with little thought or effort, with thin amounts of content and that does not provide value to the reader.

Recently, I have had a lot of companies approach me, firmly stating that they only want the very cheap web design, with a one or two page website built for them but they also want it to rank highly on Google!

I have to tell them that they cannot have both!

If you simply want a one page ‘brochure’ website, with just your company name, two lines about what you do and a phone number – by all means have one. Make a free page somewhere don’t go to a web designer/developer/SEO expert for this. This cannot however really be classed as a website, it is just a business card on line. Nothing more or less. It will absolutely not rank highly on Google or on any other search engine no matter what you do by way of promotion afterwards. Realise that people searching for a business such as yours won’t find your website. It will never bring in leads, sales or new business and it will not present the correct image for your company either.

Cheap Web Design

- Not Poor Quality
When visitors view these ‘one or two page (lacking in content) sites, chances are that these visitors will be leaving your site after only viewing one page for a second or two, this is a good indicator to the search engines that your website is not providing enough quality content to keep them interested. So having low amounts or shallow quality content on your website will badly affect your overall ranking in search engines, as will:

  • Poor design
  • Poor navigation
  • Lack of content
  • Lack of search engine optimisation
  • Poor use of keywords
  • Bad Code
  • Slow loading pages

Whilst it is true that you don’t have to pay a fortune to get a great business website (feel free to contact me for a free no obligation quote), you do have to take into account the approach that will do nothing for or even harm your business and what is required to have a good quality website, that will rank well and that will actually help your business.
